Let’s stop Idling! Why is Idling a Problem? Idling wastes money and natural resources, it can damage our vehicles, affect the environment, and harm our health.Idling hurts people.7% of children and 9% percent of adults in Utah have current asthma. It makes them so they can’t breathe and it can kill them. Air pollution can also be a factor in heart disease, chronic bronchitis and cancer. Children are particularly vulnerable because they breathe more quickly and take in more air per minute into their lungs. Exhaust enters the car when you idle, so you and your passengers are exposed to higher levels of pollution. Idling for 10 seconds uses more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it. Idling is like burning dollars.Idling is a bad way to warm up your engine. It is better to drive off slowly. Your car tends to warm up faster this way. Modern engines need less than 30 seconds of idling before driving on winter daysThe pockets of concentrated exhaust pollution at school drop off/pick up zones expose children to more pollution. Because of all of this, I created a form for people to sign to pledge to stop idling. So far I have received 65 signatures from people who drive.
